Although there may be multiple philosophical topics in films in “Film Analysis 1,” you are to focus on the topic on the Metaphysics of Personal Identity. Be sure to review the lectures/readings to accurately represent the philosophical theories
The film analysis concerns the subject of Personal Identity, which is a METAPHYSICAL issue, not an issue about how one identifies oneself. This is an objective issue (what makes you, you over time?) NOT a psychological issue about what made you the person you are today. You will be tempted to talk about how a character becomes a different person. DO NOT DO THIS!!! We’re NOT interested in their personality or their personal growth. Use Locke’s (and/or Parfit’s) philosophical theories to evaluate how the film uses or assumes one of these theories. The film may also be confused about these issues so it is your job to point out the consistency or inconsistency in the film’s assumption of a theory or personal identity. Note 1: The soul and body theories are too broad for the assignment. Do not write about the Soul or Body theory. Note 2: Your analysis needs to interact with Locke’s theory. So you need to give at least the definition of his view of personal identity. You can ultimately see that the film does not hold a Lockean theory of personal identity, but you should at least consider it before you reject it. Note 3: Do not summarize then give your philosophical point. Give you philosophical point, then support that point through scenes/dialogue from the film Note 4: The film is NOT a philosophical theory, rather it is telling a story. So do not say, “This film shows that the theory is false.” The film is not trying to object to a the film. Rather focus on how the a philosopher would interpret the nature of personal identity of the character/clone/pre-post-procedure/accident.
With each of the following films, you are thinking, “How would Locke or Parfit (or both) respond to the specific circumstances of these characters? Why would think this? Would Locke have a way to explain the unique circumstances? Give support using scenes and dialogue. Do not summarize the film then eventually give a philosophical point. Give the philosophical point, then support it with the film.
