For this discussion post, you are looking at the topic of Renaissance response poems, considering persuasion tactics, first in a pair of sixteenth-century pastoral poems (by Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh) and then in a pair of seventeenth-century persuasion poems by two so-called “Cavalier” poets (Andrew Marvell and Thomas Carew). The “Cavalier” poets were gentlemen poets who supported the monarchy (Charles I) during the English Civil Wars. They are known to value wit and raunchiness, and you will notice that their persuasion poems are more sexually explicit than the sixteenth-century ones.
Before you begin Discussion Post, please watch “Renaissance Response Poems” here:
https://youtu.be/NDGr1owlZ-Q (Links to an external site.)
and read the following in your anthology:
Christopher Marlowe (1599), “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”
Sir Walter Raleigh (1600), “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd”
Andrew Marvell (1681), “To His Coy Mistress”
Thomas Carew (n.d.), “A Rapture” (http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/carew/rapture.htm (Links to an external site.))
Then, for your discussion post, please select one strategy of seduction in Marlowe’s poem that you think Carew or Marvell is either using or refuting/replacing. (To put it another way, what reasoning does Marlowe’s Shepherd use to try to persuade his beloved to sleep with him, and how does Marvell or Carew intensify some aspect of that reasoning, add to it, OR reject that reasoning in favor of a different reason?) Use one quotation from each poem to show how the poets are using a similar or a different strategy. (250-300 words)
