The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory: Art and Islam Through Time and Place
3. The High Renaissance in Northern Europe and Spain (chap. 14)
Museo del Prado, the museum that holds Hieronymous Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights”
Choose only ONE of the above museum exhibitions for your virtual visit, and engage this in tandem with the relevant chapter. This exploration of the online exhibit will form the basis of your paper, which will have three parts:
1. Background and context. Begin with a discussion about the museum itself. Scour the website to find out and report on the history, mission, and aims of the museum. Where is it? Are there special features of the museum? Is it known to have a special focus or significant holdings? 2. Choose and describe. Now, focus on ONE item in the exhibition (not the entire museum but in the exhibit at the museum. It must correspond with the dates in the chapter (if you choose #3, you MUST focus on Hieronymous Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights”). Do not choose an object made after the sixteenth century (1500s). Fully describe the object. Include the image in your paper, and give a full and complete description of it — the materials, colors, perspective, media, angles, colors, etc., etc. Use the website to provide all the information you can about this object. 3. Synthesis and analysis. Finally, write about how this one object connects or expands or contradicts something that we’ve read so far in Culture and Values. How does the relevant chapter provide context for understanding the historical, cultural, religious, and social issues and pressures that were going on when this object was made. Explain how it contended with/responded to/reflects those issues. Be concrete here. In this part of the paper, practice the art of synthesis and analysis, showing and clearly explaining connections between the item and context, history, and social issues raised in the book. DO NOT USE first-person (“In my opinion…” “In our class…”) Write exclusively as the museum tour guide narrator who is telling a visitor about the object). You weaken your authority when you use first-person. This isn’t an opinion paper. It is a paper that informs, explains, describes, synthesizes and analyzes. IMPORTANT!
The purpose of this is to connect material, artistic human expressions with the materials in Culture and Values. Your must virtually visit one of the three options above and navigate the website well to do the first two parts. You must link together your research on one object/painting with the relevant chapter in Culture and Values to do well on the third part. Don’t worry about an introduction and a conclusion. Just follow the three prompts for the three parts of your paper. It is even fine to number each part of your paper. DO NOT use first-person person language (no “In my opinion,” “We in this country believe…” or “I think what this was about…”), using instead a formal third-person voice throughout.
Your paper is roughly two-three (2-3) pages including a small photo ( approximately 500-700 words), double-spaced, normal font with 1″ margins, and submitted to iCollege by 11:59pm Monday, March 15th. It is your own original work.
